Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Her father, who was a carnival barker, passed away as a young little girl. This forced her mother to help support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. This was not an easy path to pursue. Even though she got an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. In Boston, where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
